Laser skin resurfacing treatments are a non-invasive solution to remove facial scars, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and remove unsightly or unwanted hair. Laser facial resurfacing employs a carbon-dioxide laser to remove the outer, damaged layers of the skin to allow tighter, younger-looking skin to grow in its place. It’s a relatively quick procedure that often takes just a few minutes (or over an hour depending on the size of the treatment area) and requires about two weeks’ recovery time. There are many benefits to laser resurfacing (including higher precision to the target area and less post-operative pain) but it cannot take away deep wrinkles or eradicate sagging skin like other procedures can. Also, the effects are long lasting but not permanent since it cannot block aging or new wrinkles. Laser facial resurfacing is safe for use with other procedures and is often performed with facelifts or eyelid surgeries. At The Lubbock Plastic Surgery Institute, Dr. Schmid and Dr. Mooty use Clear + Brilliant for lighter resurfacing and Fraxel laser for more aggressive resurfacing to help their patients achieve clearer, smoother skin.

Fraxel procedures use fractional laser technology to penetrate the top layer of skin. Depending on the laser setting, light energy is applied to stimulate the creation of collagen and to resurface the top layer of skin. During the procedure, the practitioner will use the Fraxel “smart scanning” hand piece to achieve this rejuvenation process. Fraxel can be applied to the face, neck, stomach, upper and inner arms, legs, thighs and buttocks.

The Fraxel family of laser treatments, developed by Solta Medical, can deliver outstanding results, giving patients younger-looking skin. Fraxel treatments range in intensity, number of procedures needed, recovery time, and results so our staff will help patients weigh the trade-off between results and recovery before deciding which treatment is best for them. The most intense and aggressive treatment is Fraxel re:pair. This single-treatment procedure is a defensive assault against a need for a facelift. By tightening the skin, it will correct severe wrinkles, irregular texture, and sun or age spots. Since it’s the most aggressive, Fraxel re:pair also has the longest recovery time. Patients should be able to return to normal life and activities after a week. Fraxel re:store and Fraxel re:fine, both less aggressive than Fraxel re:pair, can resurface and restore minor to moderately damaged skin. In 3 – 6 treatments patients will have the younger-looking, smoother skin. Recovery time ranges from a few hours to no more than 2 days after each treatment.
What to Expect
Patients will have different experiences with Fraxel depending on whether they are receiving the Restore or the Repair treatment. During Fraxel Restore, patients should anticipate mild to moderate discomfort during their procedure. Fraxel Repair patients should anticipate moderate to significant discomfort during their treatment. For this reason, anesthesia is sometimes recommended. Although redness and minor swelling in the treated areas are common immediately following the procedure, patients undergoing this treatment can resume normal activity up to 2 days after their treatment for Fraxel Restore and up to a week after their treatment for Fraxel Repair.

Fraxel Laser FAQs
Individuals who are seeking an alternative to chemical peels and dermabrasion and who are not comfortable with a surgical procedure are among the most ideal candidates for Fraxel.
How Long do the Results Last?
The results will vary patient-to-patient depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment. Visible results have been present up to 5 years following treatment. Since Fraxel Treatments can be repeated as many times as your practitioner deems necessary, the results can last much longer than 5 years with proper maintenance. Because this treatment has the ability to be repeated, it remains at the forefront of non-invasive anti-aging skin treatments.
How Many Treatments?
The amount of treatments required to obtain optimal results vary depending on variables such as skin type, degree of treatment required, etc. Generally, patients that choose Fraxel Restore can expect to receive 3-5 treatments with several months in between treatments, while patients that choose Fraxel Repair usually only require 1 treatment.
