Overview

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy or CIT, is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for the nonsurgical treatment of fine lines, acne scars, and other skin blemishes. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to prompt the natural production of collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in thicker, smoother skin with softened wrinkles. The skin care professionals at the MedSpa at LPSI use the SkinPen Micropen to create superficial micro-channels, which allows topical gels, creams, and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin. The benefits of microneedling are a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. SkinPen also has a positive effect on hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks and generally creates a fresher appearance. Additionally, we offer DermaFrac™ technology to infuse with your skin during the microneedling treatment.

Platelet-Rich Plasma or Platelet-Rich Fibrin matrix Therapy

Microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy or platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) increases the benefits of microneedling for radiant, smoother skin. PRP or PRFM begins by removing some of the patient’s blood so it can be purified and treated until the blood serum is concentrated with healing red blood cells and plasma. Once the PRP or PRFM is prepared, the skin care professional will perform the microneedling treatment and then apply the blood serum to the micro-injuries created in the skin to help speed the healing process. Including PRP or PRFM therapy with microneedling can help patients improve their skin tone, color, and texture, as well as treat fine lines, wrinkles, scars, large pores, and other skin damages.

Procedure Technique

A sterile needle tip containing 12 tiny microneedles is attached to the SkinPen Micropen. A skin care professional at Lubbock Plastic Surgery Institute will apply a thin layer of topical gel to the skin and select the appropriate treatment depth based on the patient’s unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

Alternatively, the DermaFrac technology works in much the same way with one major difference: it simultaneously injects the skin with your choice of infusion solution. This helps your skin become smoother and more luminous with no pain or downtime. Our menu of solutions includes Rejuvenate, Lighten, Hydrate, Clarify, and Vitamin C.

During/After Procedure

The feeling associated with the SkinPen Micropen is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating needle tip reduces discomfort while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable. The procedure takes 15 – 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated. Immediately after the treatment, patients will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the depth of needles used and the number of overlapping passes your skin care professional performs. On average, patients are red up to 2 – 4 days, but some patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours. Utilizing professional quality skin care products recommended by one of our skin care professionals can help to speed up the healing process.

Microneedling FAQs

How Many Treatments?

Some patients only require a single treatment once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2 – 3 treatments spaced about 6 – 8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars, it is recommended to receive 6 – 8 sessions at 6-week intervals.

Seeing Results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to six months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

Areas To Treat?

SkinPen Micropen can be used on all parts of the body: face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen, and back.
