About KYBELLA
Excess fat in the upper neck area can create the undesired presence of a "double chin" in both women and men. These additional pockets of fat beneath the chin (or the submental area) can be caused by genetics, weight fluctuations, or aging and contribute to a softer chin and jawline for an undefined profile. Noted plastic surgeons Dr. Schmid and Dr. Mooty of Lubbock Plastic Surgery Institute are pleased to provide a revolutionary solution for reducing the appearance of a double chin. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), KYBELLA is the first nonsurgical treatment for targeting fat in the submental area. The active ingredient in KYBELLA injections is a synthetic biocompatible version of deoxycholic acid (DA). This component functions much like the DA naturally occurring in the body, which serves to break down and absorb fat cells. KYBELLA treatments destroy these fat cells once injected into the tissue below the chin and prevent these cells from reforming. A visible decrease in fat will then be noticeable, allowing you to enjoy your new slender neck and defined jawline for years to come.

Procedure Technique
KYBELLA is performed during a visit to our state-of-the-art Lubbock or Midland, TX practice location. Dr. Schmid or Dr. Mooty will usually apply a numbing cream to the treatment area to enhance comfort, if desired, once the skin is cleansed. The treatment process only takes around 15 minutes to complete and includes a few small injections into the upper neck area below the chin. While some men and women only require one session with KYBELLA, others may need a few treatments spaced over the course of 3 – 4 weeks to achieve desired results.
What to Expect
Unlike surgical treatments, KYBELLA injections do not require general anesthesia, allowing you to leave our office as soon as you feel comfortable and return to your usual activities. You may notice temporary bruising, swelling, or numbness under your chin; however, this should not last longer than 2 – 3 days. Please contact Lubbock Plastic Surgery Institute immediately if you are noticing any unusual side effects, including facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or if your facial expressions are uneven. While the fat that is destroyed does not regenerate, the cells that remain can become larger. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy weight after your KYBELLA injections to prevent new pockets of fat from forming. Optimal results following this procedure leave your neck and chin appearing sleeker and tighter and your profile better defined.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does KYBELLA cost?
The cost of KYBELLA will vary based on the number of appointments needed to complete your nonsurgical chin reduction treatment. During your initial consultation, a customized KYBELLA treatment plan will be developed to match your goals. A team member will also review the flexible payment options we accept and help you choose a solution to fit your budget.
How does KYBELLA work?
Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in KYBELLA, works to break down and destroy fat cells in the body. Once they are destroyed, these cells cannot regenerate. As a result, additional KYBELLA injections may not be necessary once your desired results are reached.
Can KYBELLA be used to treat other areas of the body?
Currently, KYBELLA injections can only be used to treat the area below and around the chin. This treatment can effectively minimize the fat in the upper neck that creates the appearance of a double chin. KYBELLA has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any other areas of the face or body.
Am I eligible for a KYBELLA treatment?
There are a few factors that could impact your candidacy for a KYBELLA treatment. You must be at least 18 years old, not pregnant or breastfeeding, and cannot have an active infection in or around your neck. Prior to receiving KYBELLA, you should share any health concerns and your medical history with Dr. Schmid or Dr. Mooty so they may determine if you can safely receive this nonsurgical chin reduction treatment.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
During your consultation, a customized treatment plan will be tailored to meet your needs. On average, patients receive between 2 – 4 KYBELLA treatments to achieve their goals, but some individuals may require additional treatments. KYBELLA appointments must also be made about 30 days apart. You should not undergo more than six treatments.
